Frozen Sunshine

Today at least the sky had the decency to be overcast. Yesterday, as it rained frozen sunshine I heard a mocking bird sing but couldn’t see it, hiding as it must be behind the cover of branches and needles, too cold to go out and too joyful for silence. I looked for the defiant singer and saw instead the squirrels as they desperately searched for their frozen, half rotted nuts-

Today, at least, the sky reflects the temperature. The impenetrable gray above that will yield neither snow nor sunshine is so much kinder than the winter sun of yesterday, with its rays devoid of all heat and its light lacking all warmth.

Wake me please, when it’s spring.
